Basic Competency

Before you can apply for a firearm license, you need to complete and pass the prescribed competency training at an accredited training institution and obtain a competency certificate.

Basic Competency consists of a minimum 2 unit standards:

• The Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000)

and at least one of the following:

• Handle and use a handgun,
• Handle and use a shotgun,
• Handle and use a manual operated rifle
• Handle and use a self-loading rifle

The basic competency training consists of a summative written test, a formative written test and a practical test.
